Hi,
Happy Friday! Here’s a list of 20 neat things.
1. Art: Paul Cezanne, the “father of Post-Impressionism”, believed the prerequisite for all work was subordination to the object.
"All the painter’s intentions must be silent. He should silence all voices of prejudice. Forget! Forget! create silence! Be a perfect echo… The landscape is reflected, becomes human, thinks in me… I climb with her to the roots of the world. We germinate. A tender excitement seizes me and from the roots of this excitement then rises the juice, the color. I was born in the real world. I see!”
2. Art: “Another year, another tech wanker promising to disrupt the creative landscape” - fun rant ha.
3. Architecture: IKEA designs 'trauma-informed' tiny home for homeless seniors in Texas - neat.
4. Music: “Within all that flamboyant shredding, there is substance and there’s beauty and there’s grace. And that’s music” - Hans Zimmer
5. Film: “Instead of treating him like a protagonist, A Complete Unknown approaches the musician like a force. It’s best sequences aren’t about Dylan so much as they are about what it was like to be in his orbit when it felt like he could remake the universe.” - good review.
6. Culture: How can we make sure men still feel connected and needed? -interesting interview with Richard Reeves. It’s a tricky subject, but I agree with a lot of it - we need to look after everyone, men and boys included.
7. Fashion: Fight Club wardrobe by Michael and Hushi. Sassy.
8. Design: CERN scientists inexplicably present Higgs boson findings in Comic Sans (2012) - funny.
9. UX: The CEDAF framework: Delegating gets easier when you get better at explaining your ideas - helpful advice by
10. UX: Revisiting “Intelligent Failure” and why you should try to fail - really good article by
“Though talk of “failing fast” is now commonplace, much of the nuance of Sitkin’s original argument is today missing from such discussion. His “strategy of small losses” is less about treating failure as feedback when it happens and more about generating failure on purpose as a proactive learning mechanism.”
11. AI: Life in 2030 (08/2024) - about Sam Altman’s Moore's Law for Everything article. Eep, but good to know what these rich tech guys believe - follow the money.
12. Tech: Newish toy - the Virtuix Omni, an omnidirectional treadmill simulator for gaming and fitness. Not really my thing (gaming, etc.), but looks fun.
13. Tech: Delete social media and explore the void.
14. Business: Learn how to introduce yourself - verbal and non-verbal tips. Seems obvious, but it’s great advice for people who are not as socially confident.
15. Business: Find out your willingness to communicate scores
16. Finance: Learn about the five different types of wealth - time, social, mental, physical, and financial.
17. Science: In case you were wondering, the aliens will not be silicon (and William Alfred Fowler sucks).
18. Food: “If they want to go back to the 1950s, we’re bringing the cuisine back to the 1950s too” - good thread by Janel Comeau, and incredible (inedible) recipes in the comments.
19. Spirituality: Learn about the five main Clairs - clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognizance, and clairalience.
20. Recommend: TV I’m currently watching - Severance, White Lotus, just binged Paradise, and finally watched Flow. I recommend them all and if you’re feeling nerdy, feel free to join me on Threads :)
