Here are my 7 favorite sci-fi shows, in no order. Excluding vampire shows.
1. Station Eleven
I love everything about this show. It’s one season, with Mackenzie Davis - from Black Mirror San Junipero and Halt and Catch Fire and it’s all art, love, life, etc… what makes us human? post-apocalypse nature world. Sort of sad and hopeful. Very we die, but we build again, etc… It’s a theme I’m into.
2. Years and Years
I feel like this is what Black Mirror should have been - like the first 2 seasons of Black Mirror were good, but in terms of politics and tech etc… it plays safe and didn’t really evolve. Years and years is also only one season, spans 2019 - 2034, and shows changes over time that are subtle, organic, realistic, and terrifying - “critiques the present with a nihilistic projection of the future” - yeesh.
3. Misfits S01-03
This ones romantic :) Less high brow and more in the superhero vein. Also answers the question “Is Ramsey Bolton (GOT) hot?” - yes, in this show, but not at first. Only watch season 1-3. The last 2 seasons are ok, but different actors. Note: there’s a scene with Foals, Spanish Sahara that’s really pretty - it’s like a watercolor blurry sex scene - merging bodies, etc…
4. Dollhouse
Whedon, so mixed feelings - we loved him in the early 00s and then, not so much :/ This show is ok, but with a few great episodes, and a really good ending! Spoiler-ish - there’s a twist I did not see coming and even in hindsight I’m still blown away and then there’s like a second ending with a time jump that does everything I always want these sci-fi shows to do - shows where the tech can really go in a way that’s quite expansive, especially for that time. The acting and characters are decent too.
Trailer here.
5. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams
In terms of style, this is similar to Black Mirror - the actors and each episode being it’s own story, but it’s Philip K. Dick, so it’s more what are dreams? feelings? what’s true? psychedelic, space, genetics, futurism, etc… I really like it - mostly the space episodes.
6. The Leftovers
Love this show! had a similar vibe to Station Eleven for me - haunting and sad, but then it turned romantic and more sci-fi - apparently that’s what the Lost people do? I never watched Lost, but I heard the criticism. In this case, with this show, it did take a bit of a turn, but I like it. Good soundtrack too.
7. Animals
I will forever complain that no one has seen this show because it’s so clever! but also too bad, now I’m gonna spoil it ha. So it starts off funny weird animal skits and then the last season goes full sci-fi and turns into what the world would look like for animals, without humans - from the animal’s perspective. I won’t spoil more, but it’s good.
